Major,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of Genl Gilmer's letter of the 31st ult. Please say to the Genl that I will report to him at an early day the condition of the Atlanta & West Point and Macon & Western Rail Roads. The Georgia R. Road is now open to Madison and will be extended to Rutledge during the present week. The Oconee bridge was covered on the 5th inst. The Alcovz bridge 650 ft long, 85 ft high, & Yellow River bridge 550 ft long, 65 ft high are both in hand and progressing satisfactorily. We lost the duplicate bridges, for Western & Atlantic R. Rd in the Sherman raid. With ample force & means, I think the Ga. R. Rd. may be opened to Atlanta on April 1st. The opinion of Maj Willis is entitled to respect but is expressed without a full comprehension of the work to be performed. The sum mentioned by the Genl. ($300,000) will suffice until 1st of March.
Very Respectfully
Your obt svt
