| I have the honor to state that, on my
assignment by Gen. Gilmer to the charge of repairs of the Rail Roads of
Geo. the services of 1st Lt. Jas. J. Davis, 3rd Reg. of Engr Troops,
were deemed by me so essential that I telegraphed Gen. Gilmer for
authority to retain him. The authority would have been asked from you
had your address been known to me. |
